Absolute Oil Independence: Sustainable Materials

Even if we manage to replace our entire gas guzzling fleet with electric cars and renewable energy, we would still need petroleum plastics to make the world go round. Look around us and the merits and problems of plastics are abundant. Issues range from the extraction process from crude oil, the additives and stabilizers that are toxic, the incineration of plastics which releases more green house gases, the non-biodegradability and harm to wildlife and pollution.

But there exist plastics which do not come from oil!

They can be produced from corn, sugarcane and many other renewable materials! Such materials are called bioplastics and they are naturally biodegradable and sustainable.

This is a panel discussion about a new generation of plastic materials. Listen to the following speakers talk about their experiences in the field:

Overview of the Clean Energy Industry in Singapore and Asia

Date: 13th March, Thursday, 5pm – 6pm Location: LT3, Faculty of Engineering

Clean energy has been touted as the next big industry. The Singapore government has set aside SGD$350 million for its development. Recently Norwegian company, Renewable Energy Corporation (or REC for short), announced their decision to establish its new worldscale solar manufacturing complex in Singapore and to create 3000 jobs by 2010.

In view of recent developments, this panel aims to give participants an overview of various clean energy industries in Singapore and Asia e.g. solar, biofuels. Topics to be discussed include the direction these different industries are taking, the technologies involved, challenges faced as well as how students can prepare themselves to enter these fast growing industries.

Panelists:

Professor SK Chou - Professor in Mechanical Engineering, NUS and Executive Director of the Energy Studies Institute.

Mr Allan Lim - CEO of Alpha Synovate, a company which deals with waste cooking oil recycling into biofuels.

Mr David Young - Managing Director of Azurra Solar

Profesor Karl Erik Birgersson - Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, NUS, expert on Fuel Cells.

Solar Architecture – Art or Business?

Date: 24th March, 5-6pm Location: LT3, Faculty of Engineering -

Speakers :

Assoc Prof Stephen Wittkopf, Department of Architecture, NUS

Mr Christophe Inglin, MD of Phoenix Solar, Singapore

The common misconception about solar panels is that they contribute negatively to the aesthetics of buildings, often existing as ugly black panels on the roofs of its host. This speaker session aims to dispel that common misconception by discussing Solar Architecture from 2 key perspectives, that of a designer and that of a systems integrator.
We will look into issues such as the challenges facing designers when trying to integrate solar panels into buildings, the feasibility of having panels on buildings and HDB flats, the market opportunities present and the economic viability of integrating solar panels onto buildings.
